    I stumbled upon…

I love this expression in English, and it’s great to hear its French equal. It really is life, right? Stumbling upong solutions, ideas, new friends, new adventures.

So much of language instruction is not about “stumbling upon” how to speak. I watch my daughter learn to speak English & Chinese and it’s very different from how we teach.

For a toddler, they are exposed to words, expressions, and grammar on a daily basis through their environment. Eventually they stumble upon ways to construct a question, follow grammar to make more complex constructions, and all of this is to communicate what they are thinking or wondering.

In class at Alliance Française, I try to emulate her. I constantly speak up, try to make questions, and pose examples based on the simple rules we get. But the textbook and the class’s structure isn’t that. It’s typically: Learn this vocab, learn this grammar, next chapter.

Fortunately the book we’re using (Edito) is set up with units based on what you might run into in France, and for real, just going through the first couple units lets you do all your shopping in the market or supermarket without issue. When the lessons are tied to speaking – asking a shopkeeper questions, trying to buy something, my improvements are far greater.

That’s why I setup this site as it is, I want to immerse in actual French and try to pick up as much as possible.

Alors que je cherchais l’endroit idéal, je suis tombée par hasard sur le site d’un camping, mais un camping un peu spécial.

Bien sûr, ils proposaient aussi le séjour dans une caravane ou dans un bungalow.

Mais ce qui m’intéressait, moi, c’étaient leurs cabanes dans les arbres.

Qui n’a jamais rêvé de passer une nuit dans les arbres ? C’est l’aventure assurée.

J’ai donc réservé une nuit dans une de ces cabanes du camping.

While I was looking for the perfect place, I stumbled upon a camping site, but a special one.

Of course, they also offered a stay in a caravan or in a bungalow.

But what interested me was their tree houses.

Who has never dreamed of spending a night in the trees? It’s a guaranteed adventure.

So I booked a night in one of these tree houses at the campground.
