    28 countries

When this was recorded, there were 28 countries in the EU. Now there are 27. This was pre-Brexit, though echoing many of the things that led to Brexit.

    Things change.

I think some of the challenge is in the expressions. I’ve highlighted a few that I stumbled over below. These are not necessarily idiomatic, but they’re still expressions that are new to me.

Another thing that I wonder is that maybe this clip is challenging as it’s of a certain time and place. The speaker seems to call out specific member states for their actions, without saying their name. Are these rhetorical questions that an educated listener in 2015 would follow along and know who he’s referring? I didn’t know French to not be direct, so this is surprising if it is the case.

Just a hunch, hardly 100%, but something I stumble over as I’m listening to this podcast episode.

This podcast is a bit of older news, but still an interesting listen. Please note, the opinions expressed in this voice essay are not mine, I just want to use it for learning purposes.

Since none of our countries, none of the 28 countries of the Union, would be alone capable of influencing the wars in the Middle East or of controlling, at least, the Libyan ports, how many Europeans would be ready today to accept that the Union or several of its members deepen their political unity?
